PHP is the language most small business websites run on, WordPress included. Which version you are on is a setting almost nobody looks at, and it has more effect than most of the things people do look at.
Speed, For Free
PHP got substantially faster across the 7.x and 8.x releases. Moving a site from an old version to a current one commonly cuts server processing time noticeably, without changing a single line of your site.
It is the rare upgrade that costs nothing and requires no redesign. If you are several versions behind, this is the cheapest performance work available to you.
The Security Half
Each PHP version has a support window. After it ends, security flaws found in that version are not fixed. Not fixed slowly. Not fixed.
A site on an unsupported PHP version is running a known-vulnerable interpreter, no matter how current your plugins are. It is the layer beneath everything else, and it is invisible from the WordPress dashboard, which is why it gets missed for years.
Why People Stay On Old Versions
Fear, usually justified once. Something broke during an upgrade years ago, it got rolled back, and nobody has touched it since. Or a plugin nobody maintains only works on the old version.
Both are real. Neither improves by waiting. The plugin will not become maintained, and the version will not become supported again.
How To Do It Without Drama
Copy the site to a staging domain. Switch the staging copy to the newer version. Click through the important pages, especially checkout and any forms. Fix or replace whatever complains.
Then do the live one, at a quiet hour, with a fresh backup taken first.
