A business without a domain of its own is a business renting an address from a landlord. The landlord sets the rules, changes the rules, and one day politely asks you to move house.
A domain you own is closer to freehold. It is the one part of your digital presence that you can pick up and move anywhere.
Why Ownership Is Different
If your email is at a free provider, you do not own the address. They do. If your website is hosted with a builder that sells you a free subdomain, you do not own the site URL. They do. If you lose access to those platforms tomorrow, through no fault of your own, you also lose every customer who ever saved that address.
A domain is different. You register it. You renew it. You pick the host. You move it when the host stops being a fit. You are the landlord now.
What To Put On A Domain
At a minimum, your email and your website. If you run a newsletter, put the list address on your domain. If you send invoices, put the finance address on your domain. If you use a CRM, make sure outgoing messages from it come from your domain with the right authentication. That last point matters more than people think. Mail that does not come from your domain, but pretends to, is the mail that lands in spam folders.
The Slow Payoff
Domains pay you back quietly. The customer who saves your address in their contacts. The ex colleague who remembers where you work because of where your mail comes from. The search engine result that links directly to a page on your own site instead of someone else's platform. Over five years, a domain you own and use well is worth more than most advertising you could buy.
